FIRST LEGO League
The NXT’s main use is in FIRST LEGO League (FLL). FLL is an international competition for children grade 4-9 throughout Canada, USA and other nations. FLL is an introduction to the world of engineering for children. It exposes them to real life challenges and helps them to develop an innovative mind. FLL teaches important skills like design, build, programming, teamwork, project and presentation skills, and of course GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM. It is broken up into three parts equally:
Robot Game – Each year there are a set of missions, based on that year’s theme, to be completed on a special mat by a robot built and programmed ahead of time. Each mission is worth different amounts of points. The goal is to achieve the highest amount of points within the two and a half minute time limit.
Research Project – Each year, teams must find a problem with an aspect of that year’s theme and create an innovative solution to it. The team must then share their findings with their community and judges in a creative and outstanding presentation.
Core Values – Teams must demonstrate the core values of FIRST – Gracious Professionalism – by working together to complete a task in a kind yet competitive mindset.
This program introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.
Elementary school students get to:
What FLL teams accomplish is nothing short of amazing. It’s fun. It’s exciting. And the skills they learn will last a lifetime.
